Romeo and Juliet ‘Maidenhead Advertiser’ Review

Rain certainly did not stop play of this quite marvellous production. The venue moved seamlessly from the green, into the candlelit church at the end of Act One which only enhanced the romantic atmosphere.

The leads Carla Kingham and Tom Pepper were outstanding and completely believable as the young lovers. They played beautifully to each other giving a touching poignant performance of the impetuousness of the young lovers. The juxtaposition of these contrasted with the practicality of the nurse and the ‘always look on the bright side’ Friar Laurence.  These were brilliantly played by Emmajane Dean and Mike Watt.

Joe Haynes, the director deserves a special mention.  Not only did he maintain a dynamic pace throughout but he also rehearsed the cast to understand the lines they delivered. With cleverly-added layers of subtext, all the components were in place to allow the piece to shine.

Every so often a real gem is uncovered and this was it – fantastic.  Isabel Smith
